Space Telescope Science Institute

We are the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy. We help humanity explore the universe with advanced space telescopes and ever-growing data archives.

Established in 1981, we have helped guide the most famous observatory in history, the Hubble Space Telescope.  Since its launch in 1990, we have performed the science operations for Hubble. We also lead the science and mission operations for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which launched on December 25, 2021. We will perform parts of the science operations for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, in formulation for launch in late 2026, and we are partners on several other NASA missions. Our staff conducts world-class scientific research; our Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) curates and disseminates data from over 20 astronomical missions; and we bring science to the world through internationally recognized news, education, and public outreach programs. We value our diverse workforce and civility in the workplace, and seek to be an example for others to follow.

titleSTSci Hybrid Work Principals

We trust our staff to be productive, effective, and collaborative no matter when or where they work.

To enable employees greater flexibility while meeting the needs of the Institute and our missions, we believe that:

  1. Everyone at STScI is a crucial part of our culture and success as an organization.
  2. Hybrid Work is about more than a physical location—it's about supporting a mix of work styles, enhancing staff productivity & creativity, improving work/life balance, and is an important reason why people want to work at STScI.
  3. Everyone is enabled to work flexibly to the extent it is in alignment with the needs of their work and their teams.
  4. Regardless of their Hybrid Work arrangement or physical presence in the office, everyone will have equal access to promotions, bonuses and pay, project assignments, recognition and awards, and other benefits of employment at STScI.
  5. Our physical space and office environment will be reimagined and aligned to reflect our support for Hybrid Work by reducing the emphasis on named offices for every staff member and by identifying more spaces for scheduled/unscheduled in-person collaboration.
  6. Staff are only required to come onsite when there is a benefit and purpose to their team, their division, or the institute. Staff who prefer to come onsite are free to do so.
  7. Divisions/Missions know their work and their teams best and should decide on how to balance limited office space, collaboration needs, staff inclusion & equity concerns, and Hybrid Work schedules.
  8. We support and encourage both in-person and remote collaboration and value the contribution of face-to-face interactions in support of a cohesive culture.
  9. Our approach to Hybrid Work must be cost-effective and support both organizational as well as staff well-being objectives.

You will be responsible for reducing and analyzing calibration data for astronomical instruments (e.g. cameras, spectrographs, coronagraphs) to optimize the scientific output of our space telescopes. You will provide user support to our worldwide community of researchers on various aspects of observation planning and data analysis. You can also get involved in ground breaking astronomical research by supporting projects led by our science staff.

Who are we looking for?

  • You are dedicated, hardworking, and eager to learn, and can work with minimum supervision. You seek additional training so you can grow professionally. You want to contribute to state-of-the-art astronomy in a work environment that respects and relies upon the diversity of its staff.
  • You have a Bachelor's degree (or above) in astronomy, physics, astrophysics, planetary science, mathematics, computer science, aerospace engineering, or related fields.
  • You have some experience in one or more of the following areas: astronomical data calibration and reduction (e.g., imaging, spectra, catalogs), scientific instrumentation, optics, astronomical observatory operations, astronomical research, statistical analysis, scientific programming (especially in python), software engineering, and development of astronomical software packages. Expertise in Machine Learning methodologies applied to scientific use cases and/or utilizing AWS services to optimize computational needs are desired skills, but not required.
