News & AnnouncementsAll

5 minPrevious & upcoming TSO observationsEspinozaLots of observations over the past month!
  • 5 more scheduled for the next couple of days

TTRB Highlights

  • Cycle 4 MIRI eclipse program
    • Wanted to add extra constraints to be within 1-2 stellar rotation periods
    • Accepted as LRP not built yet
    • Some policy discussion however as special requirements typically can only be added in exceptional circumstances
  • Cycle 3 SOSS transit
    • Current constraints too stringent
      • Either change from SOSS or adjust constraints
      • Accepted to change constraints
  • Cycle 3 NIRcam transit
    • Change observing window from July 11 to May 1 to avoid contaminant
    • Accepted!

NIRCam DHS thinking about the following in terms of pipeline:
  • Clean flicker noise (1/f)?
    • Aarynn: Thinks we should leave off for now
    • Everett: Will be hard to find clean regions of sky
  • Snowball algorithm?
    • Aarynn: If we have this on they it will mask snowballs but bleed onto other stripes, erroneous flagging
    • Michael: Wouldn't be hard to adjust this
      • We need data for this to make sure its fine tuned.
      • Thinks on by default for now
      • Could imagine a second pass to check if snowballs are expanding into a neighbouring slice.
    • Everett: Also thinks we deal with overflagging for now
      • Does it know not to mask reference pixels?
        • Michael: It specifically looks for saturated core surrounded by jump, impossible for this to be true for reference pixels
          • This behaviour does actually cause some issues for some existing observations near the edge of the detector.
      • But can it understand where the edge of the detector is?
        • Michael: Doesn't think this is the issue.
  • Flux conversion?
    • Everett: Might be difficult because each spectrum needs its own factor
      • If we keep as full frame then we need to apply things in the right way
      • Achrène - Either need to apply one photom for each substripe
        • Could build a single 2d array for this.
    • Both cycle 4 proposals are TSO, photom less important
    • Michael: Is someday someone going to want to know this?
      • Achrène: This will eventually be done, just not a priority.
    • Taylor/Hannah: If we don't have proper flux calibration it shouldn't be run.
      • Don't want people to misinterpret.
    • General summary is that we do want this eventually, but it's not super critical.
  • Extract_2d?
    • Achrène: We should have full frame
      • General agreement
5 minNIRISS SUPERSTRIPE discussion Carter
  • SOSS SUPERSTRIPE - working to implement for Cycle 5 (leveraging DHS capabilities, can increase SOSS bright limits without sacrificing wavelength coverage)
  • different ref pix for different subarray chunks (option to hop back to original ref pix for more ref pix, but less observationally efficient - smallest stripes = 20% photon loss)
Everett: Bias offsets from fast-read direction could help with the odd-even correction, but maybe we have enough sky pixels to do this
Michael: Agrees, 1/f is in the fast-read and that's the main thing we're trying to correct
  • 4 vs 2 vs 1 is roughly the same, it's a SNR thing

Aarynn: What about small stripes that are quite illuminated?

  • Michael: Would need to look in more detail.
20 minTSO notebook sprint preparation Carter
  • sprint happening soon:  4/28 - 5/2
  • make sure you have access to grit!
10 minInstrument roundtable check-inAlam, Carter, Bell/Diamond-Lowe, Dyrek
NIRSpec:
Munazza is working on charge migration & linearity TR, Leonardo has started working on time-dependent systematic slopes project
MIRI:
Hannah: Working on the subarray changes
  • Dodging 390Hz noise
  • Strong options for the two imaging subarrays
  • LRS has a range of conservative to aggressive cuts. Some weirder options too.
    • Will loop back
  • Taylor: Going through calwebb3 for MIRI and working through bugs and making Jira tickets
    • Found bug in assign_wcs for MIRI slit observations
    • TSO3 step doesn't do automatic centroiding, not good for MIRI photometry which doesn't do target acquisition

NIRISS:

Three TR's in various review stage right now

  • Jump/ramp fitting algorithms
  • SOSS background model
  • SOSS monochromatic PSF tilt

NIRCam:

  • Working on flux and wavelength calibration for DHS - Targeting June
  • Working with Cycle 4 PI's to make sure there isn't significant contamination
    • Helping to prioritise work
