In 2024 the Roman Mission decided to add a survey of the Galactic Plane in response to community feedback, and solicited White Papers and Science Pitches to identify the scientific yield of these observations. In May 2024, 10 White Papers and 32 Science Pitches were received, and the Mission created a survey design committee for the Galactic Plane. This panel was tasked to produce survey strategy options that would accomplish as much of the proposed science as possible.
During Q3 and Q4 2024, this committee reviewed the community contributed papers in detail and drew up a set of preliminary survey designs. Further community input into the design process is now sought to help the committee to finalize the survey design by April 2025. The goals of this workshop are:
- To inform the community about the committee’s progress to date and outline the approach taken
- To reassure the community that their feedback has been taken into account
- To provide the community with an opportunity to review the preliminary survey design and provide further feedback
