A Hubble Source Catalog (HSC) Use Case
Example #1: Using the Discovery Portal to Query the HSC
(Stellar Photometry in M31 - Brown et al. 2009)

The MAST Discovery Portal is the primary tool for accessing the HSC. For larger and more detailed queries, HSC CasJobs may be the more appropriate choice. The HSC Homepage is also available for some specific queries.
GOAL: This tutorial shows the use of the MAST Discovery Portal for accessing the Hubble Source Catalog.
SCIENCE CASE: Photometry in Brown's M31 (Proposal ID=10265) dataset.
Step 1 - Enter the MAST Discovery Portal. Use the dropdown menu under Select a collection: (blue) to find the Hubble Source Catalog (HSC), and then enter the text "00:49:08.09 42:44:55.0 r=0.5m" (just cut and paste if you like) into the Search box (blue). Click in the box to retrieve objects within a 0.5 minute of arc radius of the coordinates. |
Step 2 - Play with the AstroView window. Try different kinds of images (e.g., PANSTARRS, DSS, GALEX, SDSS) by clicking the gear in the bottom right. It is also entertaining to zoom way out (blue) to see that, as implied by the Target Name in the Table View, we really are way out in the disk of M31. |
Step 3 - Make a new V-I colum. Click on the Create Arithmetic Column icon (blue) and fill in the fields to define V-I (green), which then appears as the last column in the List of Objects. V-I will also then show up in the selection Filters field on the far left. Note the relatively good agreement in the A_F606W and W3_F606W values (orange). |
Step 4 - Make a V-I vs. A_F814W color-magnitude plot. Click on the View Charts for these Data icon (blue) and use the drop-down menu to designate the X and Y parameters (green). Then click on the Update Series button (green) to make the plot. Use the Reverse axis to flip the Y-axis. |
Step 5 - Overlay the HSC on an HLA image using Astroview, and then also using the Interactive Display. WE STRONGLY URGE USERS TO ALWAYS LOOK AT THE HSC OVERLAYED ON A HUBBLE IMAGE IN ORDER TO CHECK FOR ARTIFACTS! |
Step 6 - Download the data for further analysis. Return to the HSC Summary form by clicking on the appropriate home page (blue). and then click on the Export the Data to a Local File icon (orange). Fill in the File Name: box (we recommend you put "version2" in the name and take a screenshot of the page for future reference), select the Format: (orange), and then click the Export button to download the table to a local file (yellow). |
Step 7 - Compare with the Brown et. al. (2009) photometry. If you would like to make detailed comparisons yourself you will need to download the Brown et al. (2009) catalog via the MAST High Level Science Product (HLSP) webpage. Below we provide a brief summary of the results; more details are available in Whitmore et al. (2016). |
Step 8 - Compare the total CMD (i.e plot of F606W-F814W vs. F814W). |
At the brighter magnitudes the comparison is quite good. However, the Brown et. al. data is deeper than the HSC by approximately 3 magnitudes, as expected since this comes from a mosaic where all 28 visits are co-added together, compared to the HSC where the measurements are from individual visits. Version 2 goes about 0.7 magnitudes deeper than version 1 in this particular field, as you can see by comparing the diagram in Step 4 with the blue points in the above plot. More dramatic improvements in depth will be made in version 3, when mosaic images will be used for the detection images.
Typical Hubble observers employ just one or two visits, hence the difference between the HSC and coadded mosaics is much smaller. However, HSC users should be aware that it is often possible to go deeper, or to obtain more precise measurements than possible from the general-purpose catalogs produced by the HLA using only the visit-based source lists.
