Webb Office Hours Session 13:  Aug 8, 2024

Q&A's:

Q1: Where are the Webb Office Hours procedures and guidelines?

A1: Webb Office HoursType your question into the WebEx chat. We will asynchronously copy questions from the chat to this main page and work through them as a group.  If you have images to share please give WebEx permission to share your screen (you may need to log out and log back in again to enable this feature.)

Q2: I have MIRI MRS observations of galaxies and am seeing artifacts in Channel 1 that look like elongated blob structures.  For one galaxy I was able to remove it by doing pixel based background subtraction, but I do not have a background for a particular galaxy therefore I can't perform the same type of subtraction here. Is there a workaround for this?

A2: What you are likely seeing is bad pixels (see WOH Session 1 for an example). In this case, please submit a Help Desk ticket with your PID number.  The MIRI team will be able to look up an observation taken with similar exposure times and closer in time to your observations and create a custom bad pixel mask.

Q3:  My data is saturating in group 4 and I would like to recover the slope in only groups 0-3 of the uncalibrated data, is there a way to reprocess the data using the pipeline with these parameters?

A3:  Yes, this is possible in Stage 1 Detector Processing, you can manually set the groups that you want to exclude (setting the GROUPDQ flags for the groups you don't want to use to DO_NOT_USE).  You can read about the stages and options here: https://jwst-pipeline.readthedocs.io/en/latest/jwst/pipeline/main.html
Please submit a Help Desk ticket to get a more specific answer if needed.
