This page archives Slack comments from the splinter session on the MOS stepping mode of the Improving JWST Data Products Workshop (IJDPW).

Ok, I've created this channel for the MOS session this afternoon instead of the private slack thread that we were using.  Plan is to meet in the 3rd floor south corner office at 2:30pm EST.

Summarizing discussion from yesterday:

  • There are two independent programs doing MOS stepping, and two implementations of software to combine MOS data into data cubes; discussion of the algorithmic differences and benefits/drawbacks of each approach
  • Method 1 relies on regularly-stepped observations and used a fixed set of shutters, but can handle outliers in the data being combined and is robust against bar shadow effects
  • Method 2 used existing pipeline cube building infrastructure, projecting the WCS of pixel corners to combine arbitrary sets of data with different shutters/orientations, but outlier detection must be handled elsewhere, and results can be degraded by bar shadow effects.
  • Plan to each try to produce a cube for an example object from each program, compare results
  • Share existing code infrastructure for preprocessing; MSA files need to be hacked to properly associate shutters with objects.  Aim to get this to a single hands-off script that requires no additional inputs and can be general.
  • Discussion of challenges in developing APT implementations, and future improvements that could make this easier.
