Webb Office Hours Session 15:  September 12, 2024

Q&A's:

Q1: Where are the Webb Office Hours procedures and guidelines?

A1: Webb Office HoursType your question into the WebEx chat. We will asynchronously copy questions from the chat to this main page and work through them as a group.  If you have images to share please give WebEx permission to share your screen (you may need to log out and log back in again to enable this feature.)

Q2: Proposal preparation question: multi-observatory proposal. What if I want to coordinate my JWST observation with an observatory that's not in APT list?

A2:  Make sure to indicate in the scientific justification that a coordinated observation is required for the program. It's important to note whether simultaneous coverage is needed, whether some overlap is needed, etc. Add the coordination as a special requirement in APT.

Q3:  For an exoplanet observation where I want to observe a transit, how do I indicate this?

A3:  Add phase constraint as a special requirement. If coordination with other observatories are needed, make sure to add a justification for this coordination in the proposal text. You can submit a help desk ticket for follow-up questions.

Q4:  Is MIRI LRS slit available for time series observations?

A4:  The APT template for LRS slit observations does not allow a time series observations special requirement to be added. Also the template requires dithering while TSOs should be done without dithering. At this time, MIRI LRS slit spectroscopy is not supported for TSOs.

Q5: The policies say 12 point font is required everywhere in science justification, even in figure caption. However, the template has 11 point font for figure captions. Which should I follow?

A5: Use the template for the scientific justification and use the defaults in the template. 12 point font should be for captions

Q6: Do you have a timeline for when PandExo in ExoCTK will be updated to synch with ETC v. 4.0 so the sensitivities are up-to-date with latest throughputs?

A6: Hopefully within a week. ETC can be used in the interim.

Q7: Are coordinated parallel observations meant for using 2 instruments at the same time?

A7: Yes.

Q8: Does justifying duplicate observations have to happen within new page limits?

A8:  There is an additional page that can be used to justify duplications, special requirements, etc. References don't count towards page limit.

Q9: For a multi-observatory proposal, what if I don't know what observatory we'll be using? If we get JWST time, how do we work with STScI to schedule observations to enforce coordination?

A9:  If you can provide a block of time when your target is visible by possible observatories, that would be helpful. There has to be justification in the proposal for coordination. We schedule observations within your approved special requirements. We can't re-schedule an observation to synch with an observatory that's not on the APT list.
