Webb Office Hours Session 22:  January 23, 2025

Q&A's:

Q1: Where are the Webb Office Hours procedures and guidelines?

A1: Webb Office HoursType your question into the WebEx chat. We will asynchronously copy questions from the chat to this main page and work through them as a group.  If you have images to share please give WebEx permission to share your screen (you may need to log out and log back in again to enable this feature.)

Q2:  I have NIRISS slitless spectroscopy data and am trying to correct 1/f noise.  What is the most optimal way to do this for NIRISS?

A2: There are many methods and parameters for 1/f noise correction.  None of them do a perfect removal, so it is best to try them out and play around with the parameters to find what works best for you.

The best place to start is by following the guide on the NIRISS 1/f Noise Removal JDox page which recommends using the "onefcorr" and "onefcorr_wfss" functions available at this GitHub repository.  The key parameters for onefcorr and onefcorr_wfss are explained on the JDox page.

You can also read about the clean flicker noise step, which is available in the pipeline in the calwebb_detector1 stage (this is an optional step and turned off by default).  The parameters, including options to use a mask, are described in detail here

The work on 1/f noise is still ongoing and more improvements will be made in upcoming builds.  Read about the current build, known issues, and developments coming soon on the JWST Operations Pipeline Build Information JDox page.

If you encounter any issues or have more questions/feedback, please submit a ticket to the Help Desk or join us again for another Office Hours session.
